Dr. Kevin Hogan on The Law of Attraction

Today I want to share with you, a very interesting even
controversial point of view concerning “The Law of Attraction
as seen in the movie “The Secret

This article was written by Kevin Hogan Psy.D

Kevin who is a very friendly person, granted me permission to reproduce this article here.

Your Questions Answered!

My Question is…Have you seen the movie “The Secret”? If so, what did you think of it? I think that it has many potentially devastating ideas in it, under the guise of being helpful.

My Question is…What’s your opinion of ‘The Law of Attraction’?

The Secret…The Truth Behind the Lie
by Kevin Hogan

and the first truth is... that God is not a Slot Machine.

The new book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne is an encapsulization of a recurring and sadly destructive wish for magic, to be real.

Shoot, to everyone wants to be able to play Quidditch. We all have hoped for potions and spells to be effective at rendering a teacher or professor silent for a day…we all want to be able to fight off evil dementors…

It’s the simple notion that you can blink your eyes or wiggle your nose and that which you desire will appear….that Santa Claus really will come down the chimney…(and if anyone wanted to believe that…it would be me) …the simple notion that these things are real is where things start to get scary…offensively terrifying.

If the devastation that goes along with such a book weren’t so huge, I would just write it off as silly, ridiculous or cute. But because the book is destructive, I can’t go there. This article refers specifically to Byrne’s contribution to her own book. Some of the contributors gave useful content (Denis Waitley for example). But Ms. Byrne is living in a scary non-reality.

The Magical “Law of Attraction”
The premise of the philosophy is the “Law of Attraction.” The idea is that if you can mentally attract it, it will come. “It’s just as easy to attract $10,000 as it is $1,” the author says.

Unfortunately, that is either a cruel lie or a deadly mistake. That statement is neither correct nor true.

God is *not* a slot machine.

He doesn’t withhold the money from the people of the African continent because they are unable to “believe enough”, nor does he bless the Americans (or Australians) because they believe so much better.

The “Law of Attraction” as it is presented in metaphysical literature like The Secret is indeed a lie and a mistake.

The Attraction Principle

The Attraction Principle, on the other hand, is rock solid science. The Attraction Principle is about “priming.” It’s complex inside the brain, but it’s fairly simple in principle: If you “filter” for something, you’re more likely to see it.

So, if I tell you to be aware (or not be aware) of the number 23 this week, I promise you will notice it….far more often than you will have dreamed possible. 23.

The importance of the Attraction Principle is that our primed awareness IS relevant to our achievement and success in life. In fact, it’s paramount to both.

However, it is by no means a law.

I only could wish that were true….

If I’m in Ethiopia, I can “attract” all the food, water, and AIDS vaccines I “believe in”, and I will die right next to the other million children.

That is where the Attraction Principle (that I’ve written about for a decade) is so fundamental. If there is no food in the environment or possibility it will come, the brain still filters for it, it just isn’t “findable” because it is not there.

In fact, I would challenge the promoters and authors of The Secret, promoters of the so-called “Law of Attraction”, to hop a bus or train or plane to Somalia, with stops in Ethiopia and see just how unattractive they and their law are.
Were that it could be true.

But this is one of the greatest deceptions.

So the promoters sit next to the dying child in Somalia and say, “no, no, no believe harder.” “Do it.”

And she closes her eyes and dies.

She couldn’t believe well enough, efficiently enough, hard enough….

Bull**it.

That child like all children doesn’t know what reality is.

Children believe what we tell them.

And they die right next to the adults who believed the purveyor’s of deadly guilt.

And they ALL deserve to LIVE.

Well, the author and promoters of the “Law of Attraction”, come to the conclusion that the BILLION people that are in Africa have earned the right to starve to death, as they do not believe. They refused to accept the $10,000 as readily as the $1.

They don’t feel guilt, because, of course, according to their guess, the Africans have attracted the life they were meant to have. Past life, a lesson, something they must learn.

Thank God the author has a limo.

Thank God the promoters have private jets.

And they fly over to China on the jets.

Smoggy and bustling cities. Impoverished in the rural. Another BILLION people. 500 million of which will rot away…

The “Law of Attractioners” come to the village but because the 500 million can’t believe enough or effectively enough, they all rot away as well…

Back to the private jets and this time off to Cuba where the poverty isn’t as bad as Africa. These people have shacks at least, and, typically, water. Millions of them.

The “Law of Attractioners” have lunch on the jet before landing because there is no good food to attract.

They spend the day teaching the impoverished Cubans how to use “the Force” like Yoda, but the Cubans are as “stupid” as the Africans and Chinese were. These damn non-English speaking people…

No attraction today. No $10,000. No $1. Nothing.

Back to the plane.

Off to California where people have the decency to speak English. A stop at my little friend Kirk’s house in Clovis.

Kirk is a real life Kindergarten-age kid that isn’t going to Kindergarten.

Because of a stroke he suffered as an infant, he can barely move his body. Barely smile. Thanks to stem cell therapy he can do those two things. He’ll get a couple of more treatments, but the “Law of Attractioners” have to tell his parents that this is what they have “attracted into your life.”

The little boy is destined, fated to have this life.

But to heck with the fact the little boy can’t talk beyond a couple of drooling words.

That’s his destiny.

How about the $10,000 here?

Sorry family, Mom has to stay home all day to take care of the boy. There will be no $10,000 attracted every month for 5 years for treatments.

The “Law of Attractioners” teach the family how to attract. They hold their Yoda-like hands out, close their eyes and believe. They are convinced…they are faithful…they are positive…

…but nothing comes.

…only more pain and tears.

The “Law of Attractioners” tell them they have attracted this life. It’s their destiny. They didn’t believe right…much like the Africans, the Chinese, Cubans…

Except all of them did believe. They bought into the story and now have been left to die with guilt instead of simply starving to death, had the “Law of Attractioners” left with them alone on their way out of the country.

Ah…and then we go to dinner with the “Law of Attractioners”…perhaps in Hollywood where the book is selling very well indeed…where people believe and receive….
They order dinner but it never comes because the kids in the back are all manifesting away…believing that they will not need to work tonight and will certainly have the money on the table in the morning…and will have no need to do something as hard as save for college….the school work doesn’t need to be studied because attracting $10,000 is as easy as $1 and they apply the simple law to their homework.

Except… they fail the test. They end up on the street because they believed a little too much and did a little too little…

…and no dinner was served.

…but it doesn’t matter…it wasn’t meant to be…irritated the Attractioners depart and are happy to hop in the limo and go home to a delightful gourmet dinner that they attracted last week, cooked because they thought it (and because Jose cooked it.)

…they fall asleep thankful…being blessed that they believed…in the “Law of Attraction” and knowing that for the billions of others they taught, it simply wasn’t meant to be. Those that starve, that die of dyssentery…it doesn’t matter because it was their destiny. All is as it is supposed to be as they turn over and fall asleep…as they have an afternoon taping of the next TV show where they will go and harm and permanently scar another million lives with the belief in the magical “Law of Attraction”………………….

if there is anyone you know that has the ability to heal cancer, cool global warming, attract profound wealth (or even a little) with only their mind, please feel free to NOT write, YET, but better, please help them find their way to the local Children’s Hospital. Please don’t tell anyone why the visit… Simply heal the kids that are dying and attract in money for the medical bills given to the parents for those who are not.

THEN please do write and let me know about the multiple healings the person has performed and where they will be tomorrow, for I will be there too, to observe and report back to the world, to CNN and ABC and FOX and the BBC….
